A non-bedside nursing role is a permanent position that requires a registered nurse's clinical knowledge and judgement but does not involve direct patient care on a ward, in theatre or in a clinic. In Australia these roles sit mostly with medical device, pharmaceutical, digital health and private healthcare employers. At Aussie Nurse Recruiters we call this nursing beyond the bedside, and it is the only kind of role I recruit for.
I am Michelle Mexted. Twenty-two years in recruitment, the last seven on my own, and I now work only on these roles. This page is the map. Each role below has its own page with the definition, who hires for it, what they screen for, and how a nurse gets in.
Clinical educator: trains clinical staff to use a product safely and well for a device, pharmaceutical or healthcare supplier. No sales quota.
Clinical specialist and applications specialist: supports a sales territory in theatre and on the ward, runs evaluations and go-lives, and protects the account after the sale.
Patient support programme nurse: helps patients start and stay on a prescribed therapy for a pharmaceutical company or its service provider, usually by phone or video.
Case manager and injury management advisor: coordinates recovery and return to work for insurers, compensation schemes and rehabilitation providers.
Nurse advisor and clinical governance lead: provides clinical expertise to an organisation rather than to patients, in governance, compliance, quality, product safety and policy.
Telehealth clinical lead and clinical informatics: owns the clinical protocols of a digital health service, or configures the systems clinicians work in.
Four groups. Medical device companies and healthcare suppliers. Pharmaceutical companies and the providers that run their patient programmes. Digital health and healthcare software businesses. Private healthcare providers, including hospital groups, aged care operators, home care and insurers. Public hospitals and universities employ nurses off the ward too, but they recruit through their own portals and pay scales, and they are not where a specialist agency works.
I do not publish a single figure because it moves by state, specialty, product and employer. The direction is consistent: experienced clinical educators, clinical specialists and applications specialists in device and pharma are paid well into six figures, usually with a vehicle or allowance, and above what a senior ward nurse earns without penalties. Patient support, case management and nurse advisor roles vary more. Compare the whole package, including business hours and the loss of shift penalties, before deciding.

If you are a nurse: Join the list and tell me a little about where you are at. I will tell you which of these roles your background suits, and you hear about roles before they are advertised.
If you are hiring: Send me the brief. You get a shortlist by a date I name before I start, usually inside two weeks, and every placement carries a six month replacement guarantee.
