When a role outside the hospital gets signed off, the first question is nearly always what to pay. Here's what the public numbers say for the roles I recruit, what they don't tell you, and what actually decides whether a nurse says yes.

What the advertised numbers say

RolePublished figureWhat to know
Clinical specialist$140,000 to $160,000 (SEEK average advertised, June 2026)Often quoted as a package including super, car or bonus. Base alone is usually lower.
Clinical applications specialistAround $100,000 (PayScale average, 2026)Usually before bonus. Varies a lot by product and territory.
Clinical nurse educator$130,000 to $140,000 (SEEK average advertised for nurse educators, August 2026). Around $114,000 (Indeed average, June 2026)Public figures lean heavily on hospital roles. Supplier and device educator roles are priced differently.
Patient support program nurseToo few advertised salaries for a reliable public figureDepends on therapy area, employer, and whether the role is field based or phone based.

Figures as at September 2026. Some advertised salaries include super and other benefits and some don't, so treat them as a starting point, not a price.

Why the advertised number can mislead you

The number that decides whether a nurse accepts your offer isn't their base rate. It's what they earn in total today, including penalties, overtime, allowances and salary packaging. A hospital nurse on a modest base can be earning well above it once weekends and nights are counted, and moving to a Monday to Friday role means giving all of that up.

So an offer that looks generous on paper can still be a pay cut to the person reading it.

How to make your offer land

  • Ask what the candidate earned in total last financial year
  • Talk about the salary range in the first conversation, not the last
  • Show the whole package in one place: base, super, car or allowance, bonus and any salary packaging
  • Be upfront about travel and hours
  • Make the offer within two days of the final interview

Common questions

What does a clinical specialist earn in Australia?

SEEK's average advertised salary for clinical specialist roles was $140,000 to $160,000 in June 2026. Many of those ads quote a package that includes super, a car or bonus, so base salary on its own is usually lower.

What does a clinical nurse educator earn in Australia?

SEEK's average advertised salary for nurse educator roles was $130,000 to $140,000 in August 2026, weighted towards hospital roles. Indeed's average for clinical nurse educators was around $114,000 in June 2026.

Why do nurses turn down offers that look competitive?

Because they compare your offer with what they earn in total today, including penalties, overtime, allowances and salary packaging, not with their base rate. Ask what they earned in total last financial year and build your offer from there.
